The Journey of a Public Servant: Michelle’s Story
A Love Story Rooted in Tradition
In 2014, Michelle traded West Coast life in Pasadena, California for the charm of Vero Beach, Florida. Little did she know that this move
would define both her personal and professional destiny. It was here that she met her husband, James Spoonhour, and discovered her
calling in election administration. Their shared devotion to the historic beauty of St. Augustine culminated in a beautiful wedding in the iconic Lightner Courtyard.
Navigating the Front Lines of Democracy
Michelle’s expertise was put to the ultimate test when she relocated to Cobb County, Georgia. As a key player in the Elections Office just outside of Atlanta, she stood at the epicenter of the national spotlight. Managing the complexities of a high-stakes election year for over 444,000 registered voters, Michelle navigated a grueling schedule of six elections in a single year. Her experience in Georgia solidified her determination as a professional capable of maintaining accuracy and precision under immense pressure.
Calling St. Johns County Home
The call of family brought Michelle and James back to their beloved St. Augustine following the birth of their daughter, in 2020. Even as her family grew, Michelle’s commitment to her community never wavered. While pregnant with her son, she served on the front lines as a poll worker during the 2022 cycle, ensuring every neighbor's voice was heard.
Beyond her administrative expertise, she utilized her knowledge in American Sign Language to bridge communication gaps, offering open and clear support to Deaf voters within St. Johns County to ensure an inclusive and accessible voting experience.
By the landmark 2024 election season, Michelle joined the St. Johns Elections Office as the Vote-by-Mail Coordinator. In this pivotal position, she oversaw the complex systems and processes that allow citizens to participate in democracy from their own homes, ensuring that every vote was handled with the security and professional care the voters of St. Johns County deserve. As a lifelong Christian and Republican, Michelle looks forward to serving the community she quickly fell in love with. She will bring Customer Service back to Public Service.

Local voters and those traveling out-of-state during the election,
if you did not renew your vote-by-mail request after the 2024 elections, you will not receive vote-by-mail ballots for this year's elections.
Military members, their family, and overseas citizens are allowed accommodations to ensure their votes are protected. Use this form to request your vote-by-mail ballots for this year's election cycle.
